Civilization Sequence

Historical Reports

Data (article measurements) from daily batches of Today's News are aggregated here to build the Information and Knowledge base of readers.

We provide the statistics of the standard defined by Professor Alexander Tyler, a Scottish advocate, judge, writer and historian who was a Professor of Universal History and Greek and Roman Antiquities at the University of Edinburgh.

He stated the average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years. FYI, 247 years have passed since the Declaration of Independence. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

From bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to great courage; from courage to liberty; from liberty to abundance; from abundance to complacency; from complacency to apathy; from apathy to dependence; from dependence back into bondage.

Certain quarters have questioned the attribution of this model to Professor Tyler. Whether or not he or someone else postulated the model is irrelevant: we are using it and to-date over the last 11-plus years, and more than 120,000 articles coded, it has accurately mirrored public opinion polls regarding the direction of our country.
